The tea scoop, known as "chagō," is an essential utensil in the sencha tea ceremony, used to transfer tea leaves from the tea caddy to the teapot.

The practice of sencha, which involves brewing tea leaves directly in hot water, was introduced to Japan from China in the 16th century. Prior to this, Japanese tea culture primarily revolved around matcha, a powdered tea that is whisked with hot water. Matcha is deeply intertwined with Zen philosophy and was particularly favored by the samurai class.
