A small dog-shaped figure that fits in the palm of the hand, fashioned with its forelegs braced and its tail raised. Its rounded body and slightly bemused expression make it particularly striking despite its diminutive size.

The surface is primarily red lacquer, with black lacquer mingled in a mottled pattern. Vermilion and black overlap in flowing layers, and where the ground occasionally shows through the lacquer develops a complex appearance. The mottled lacquer landscape and the abrasion from prolonged use combine to produce the distinctive patina unique to aged lacquer.

The modeling avoids strict realism, capturing the ears, muzzle, forelegs, and tail with economy. While retaining a canine charm, the red-and-black lacquer surface also conveys a robust folk‑art quality.

Surface abrasion and flaking of the lacquer are apparent, yet the overall form remains well preserved. With its red-and-black mottled pattern, rounded contours, and palm-sized proportions, this is a charming example of Meiji-period lacquer.
