幕末から明治期にかけて活躍した亀文堂は、滋賀・近江に拠点を構え、鉄瓶や茶道具の名品を数多く遺したことで知られます。本品はその涼炉で、厚手の鉄地に幾何文をめぐらせた端正な作り。上縁には雷文、胴には細かな格子文を刻み、古格を備えた装飾が全体を引き締めています。
胴部に穿たれた火孔や、張りのある胴裾、獣脚風の三足が力強く、鉄地はよく枯れて深い景色を見せています。底部には亀文堂の来歴を示す「家戌日本琵琶湖在東」の銘が刻まれています。日々の茶席に取り合わせてみてはいかがでしょうか。
