This exceptionally small piece of Delftware dates back to the 17th to 18th centuries. The rich, yogurt-like white glaze, achieved by adding tin to the transparent glaze, served as a foundation for the development of underglaze painting and polychrome decoration. The low-fired clay of Delft is fragile, and over time, it tends to crumble and flake. The plain white Delft serves as a canvas that bears the marks of time.
