OLD TIN TEA SAUCER, Copper-covered with floral design, incised and openwork-carved, set of 5【未翻訳:鳥】, Qing Dynasty (1616–1911 CE)

An oval tea saucer with rounded, slightly raised ends. Circular openwork motifs are set on either side, and a narrow copper rim encircles the edge. The tin’s muted silver is delicately complemented by a fine line of copper’s yellowish tone.

The ground is incised with birds and flowering branches, the remaining surfaces filled with fine punchwork. The elaborate workmanship combines openwork carving, incising, and an applied rim; the reverse bears a Guangxu reign mark.

During the Qing dynasty, tin was used for tea utensils, including teapots and saucers. Easy to work, it develops a more subdued surface sheen with use. This piece likewise reflects the period’s taste for incorporating bird-and-flower motifs and openwork carving into everyday teaware.

Signs of age include surface wear, scratches, discoloration, slight distortion, and minor damage to the openwork and rim edging. Offered as a set of five; when paired with sencha bowls or small Chinese tea cups, one can enjoy the shadows cast by the openwork and the rich, deep tones of the tin.
