The mythical creature known as the Chinese lion, or "karajishi," was introduced to Japan from China during the Tang Dynasty. Revered for its powerful ability to ward off evil spirits, it has been depicted in various forms throughout history.

This piece is a karajishi incense burner from the Muromachi Period, crafted on a base of high-purity iron and adorned with brass. The intricate details of the swirling patterns are beautifully carved, showcasing the artistry of the era.

Over time, the brass has nearly worn away, revealing the underlying iron. The passage of years has led to an intriguing patina, where oxidized verdigris and white rust have merged. The soft, gentle expression of the piece evokes a charming, almost breath-like quality.
