KARAKI WOOD TEA TRAY, With a rectangular form with indented corners, Qing Dynasty (1616–1911 CE)

Made from dense karaki wood with clipped corners and a raised rim, this is a Qing dynasty sencha tray. The tray’s well is deeply hollowed, and the curved surface from rim to well retains ample thickness. Devoid of ornament, its strength is expressed solely through the wood’s substantial presence and the clarity of its contours.

When lifted, it weighs approximately 1.2kg, giving it a substantial heft. Unlike thin sencha trays, it does not wobble when supporting a teapot or tea bowls and remains stable when set on a table. Although it has been used for many years, there is no noticeable warping.

The wood ranges in color from reddish-brown to deep brown, the tones overlapping, and the tray surface bears wear, stains, and fine scratches. The rim has been softened and rounded by long handling, acquiring the worn sheen characteristic of well-used karaki. The underside is deeply recessed at the center, with a thicker band left around the perimeter.

At 36cm in width, it is a convenient size for a sencha tray, comfortably accommodating a small teapot and several teacups. When implements are placed on it, the thick wooden body and its low-set profile are especially effective, firmly supporting the tea vessels.

Shows scuffs, scratches, stains, and uneven coloration consistent with age. There is no significant warping or distortion, and it is suitable for practical use.
