VERMILION-LACQUERED HAM, Qing Dynasty（1616–1911CE）

A low, horizontally elongated box with a softly rounded lid, presenting a quietly restrained silhouette. The surface is finished in a deep vermilion lacquer with a warm red undertone that, with age, has darkened to a more subdued hue. Though simple in form, the round central lock and the row of metal fittings across the front serve as pleasing accents.

There is a certain refined restraint in its form that recalls Ming-period wares; the rectilinear, sparsely decorated box shape is well matched by a gently curved lid. Rather than being lavishly ornamented, it appears to have been made as a box for quietly housing paintings and calligraphy, writing implements, and incense utensils.

The interior reveals a ground suggestive of leather or bark-like material, finished in vermilion lacquer. Unlike the exterior’s red‑black vermilion, the interior retains a bright red hue, and when the lid is opened one perceives the depth characteristic of aged vermilion lacquer.

Given its slender form, it is well suited as a box for stationery, small objects, or tea-ceremony accessories, and makes an attractive display when placed simply on a shelf. Its mellow, red-tinged patina harmonizes with white porcelain, antique ceramics, and wooden implements.

Due to its age, the surface shows abrasion, scratches, areas of lacquer loss, and contact marks. The interior vermilion lacquer exhibits lifting and surface irregularities. Consequently, the price has been reduced. Please understand this as characteristic of an older piece.
