SPHERICAL WOOD, Early Modern Period(16th–19th centuries)

Sale price¥231,000

This is a spherical block of wood, meticulously carved to evoke a captivating presence that draws the eye from afar. Upon closer inspection, the delicate grain, rugged twists, and the texture reminiscent of a grand tree create a diverse landscape of visual intrigue.

It is not a world that can be crafted by human hands alone; rather, it is the result of nature and time, and this allure is one of the reasons I am drawn to antiques.

In a contemporary setting, it stands as a striking objet d'art, and even when placed in the tokonoma of a tea room, it invites contemplation of its significance.

While such large spherical wooden blocks are occasionally encountered, this particular piece is one that has particularly captivated me among those I have encountered.
