BOWL, Yuezhou kiln, green-glazed, Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE)

A green-glazed bowl from the Yuezhou kiln, Song Dynasty.

A shallow, open small bowl with a slightly undulating rim and a low footring.
The glaze ranges from grey-blue to grey-green, and soil staining—apparently from its excavation—remains across the surface. From the bowl’s interior toward the rim, a reddish earth tone shows beneath the glaze, giving the piece a subdued, weathered character characteristic of ancient ceramics.

The Yuezhou kiln is a representative southern Chinese producer of celadon wares, active from the Tang through the Five Dynasties into the Song.
Rather than the clear blue of later Longquan celadon, it is characterized by an ash‑tinged blue‑green glaze and a surface that still shows the presence of the clay. This bowl, while intended for appreciating the celadon color, bears soil staining from burial and subtle changes to the glaze, which together impart a quiet, aged patina.

Traces resembling firing-support marks remain in the interior, and the glaze surface exhibits fine crazing, iron staining, and areas of glaze roughness.
The exterior also retains an ash-blue glaze, and around the foot there are red-earth deposits and trimming marks. The rim shows small chips and areas of glaze loss, but the piece remains in a stable condition consistent with its age as an antique ceramic.

It could also have served as a stand for vessels used with Chinese tea or sencha.
