SMALL COLOR-GLAZED JAR, Delftware, Dutch Antique, Early Modern Period（16th–19th centuries）

A small color-glazed Delftware jar, Dutch antique.

Made from a reddish clay, this small jar has a pleasantly rounded body that fits comfortably in the hand. The out-turned rim, slightly constricted neck, and low-set base give it a straightforward, unpretentious appearance typical of domestic pottery.

An amber-colored lead glaze flows over one side of the body, while the opposite side reveals the fired red-clay surface. Fine crazing and dark kiln-stains lie atop the glaze, placing glossy areas alongside the rough, sandy clay. The resulting contrast evokes the restrained charm of Ko-Karatsu ware.

When one thinks of Delftware, the white tin glaze painted in blue—Delft blue—is most familiar; yet in the Netherlands there were also rustic everyday wares fashioned from red clay and coated with lead glaze. This object is a small ceramic piece belonging to that tradition of colored Delftware.

Though diminutive enough to fit in the palm, it clearly reveals its amber glaze, red clay body, and the dark tones developed in firing. It harmonizes with antique ceramics, wooden objects, and Joseon-era wares, and when placed on a shelf it conveys a quiet presence.

Small chips are present around the rim and at the base, together with adhering soil and areas of glaze loss. The amber-toned glaze complements the red clay surface, giving this small jar a notably appealing presence.
