A hexagonal bonsai container with Jun ware glaze from the Qing dynasty.
A hexagonal, faceted bonsai container with a rim that projects outward and low, firmly set feet. The body gently swells on each facet, while the ridged corner lines lend a crisp definition to the form. Its proportions, neither too small nor too large, make it well suited to display on a shelf or beside an alcove.
The glaze is predominantly red, with mottled kiln variations of black, green, and gray-blue. The glaze flows well from the rim over the body to the foot, and on each facet the intensity of the red and the presence of black spots vary. The substantial coloration characteristic of Jun kiln glazes gives the vessel a deep, layered appearance of red and black markings. Red glaze is also applied to the interior, producing a cohesive effect inside and out. There are some minor encrusted areas in the basin, but no noticeable flaking at the rim or on the body; the vessel itself is in good condition. As a bonsai basin—or used as a flower vessel or for display—it commands a notable presence.
A wooden box is included. The box shows damage, including insect holes.
