This is an antique basket with handle made from traditional lacquerware known as "rantaishikki."
Rantaishikki is a type of lacquerware that flourished in Guangdong Province. The term "rantai" refers to lightweight and durable vessels crafted by weaving bamboo or wooden strips. The surface of these woven pieces is coated with lacquer and often adorned with intricate carvings and decorations.
Guangdong Province is renowned for its bamboo, and the unique weaving techniques developed there are characteristic of rantaishikki. This lacquerware encompasses a variety of forms, including tea sets, vases, boxes, and fans, with decorations typically featuring botanical motifs and animal designs.
The basket is lightweight and convenient for transport, making it ideal for storing tea leaves or carrying tea utensils to outdoor tea gatherings, thus proving to be a valuable item for tea ceremonies.
As this is an antique piece, it does exhibit some wear; however, it remains functional and can still be appreciated for its historical significance.
