JAR, Nanban, Muromachi Period (1336–1573 CE)

The Nanban trade, which began in the late Muromachi period with China, facilitated the exchange of various goods. This piece is believed to have been introduced during that time. The rim features a double structure, allowing for a lid to be secured, while the base is designed for stability, reminiscent of a boat-shaped vessel. It possesses a substantial weight, akin to that of stone. It is likely that this item was brought to Japan as a container for distilled spirits.

The rim shows signs of extensive use, with the glaze having become deeply embedded, exemplifying the beauty inherent in utilitarian ware. Its considerable weight relative to its size allows for the bold display of large branches or floral arrangements.
